MITRE’s Open Health Services department seeks an experienced Principal in the domain of Health Analytics and Visualization to join our team for a full-time position at MITRE’s Baltimore site.

As a Group Leader in MITRE’s Healthcare Technical Center, you will oversee staff, develop one or more communities of practice with department members (and members of other departments, as needed), and help support relevant work Health and Healthcare programs. You will coordinate with other Health Technical Center departments to ensure optimal contributions to ongoing efforts and projects.

Staff Management:
• Provide leadership and first line, day-to-day management for personnel (avg. 7-10 individuals);
• Oversee and facilitate routine administrative aspects of employment;
• Support onboarding and assimilation for new employees;
• Communicate regularly with Group members to ensure well-being, engagement, and job satisfaction
Career Development:
• Provide coaching, mentoring, and guidance for Group members to enable performance;
• Engage in regular CLEAR Conversations to a create positive atmosphere for group members to develop realistic goals that capitalize on their strengths and interests;
• Advocate for group members to identify opportunities for career experiences and developmental opportunities
Project Placement:
• Engage in staffing activities to match projects with staff competencies and identify stretch assignments to develop new skills;
• Support development of transition plans and facilitate transitions between projects that meet the needs of projects and group members.
Performance Management:
• Engage in regular discussions with Project and Team Leads about expectations, performance, and growth opportunities for Group members;
• Seek information and feedback on group member's performance and recommend corrective/development action when needed;
• Participate in annual performance management reviews accurately and on time;
• Identify opportunities to recognize and reward group member's accomplishments
Quality Management:
• Work with the DHs and other leadership and team members to promulgate a culture of quality, excellence, teamwork, staff development, continued learning, innovation, evaluation, and benchmarking to ensure continuous improvement within the department and on all aspects of the department's work program.
• Support the development of skills through training and experiential opportunities;
• Encourage group members to seek and provide technical reach back within their areas of capability and expertise;
• Serve as technical subject matter expert/referent to review staff work progress and artifacts as part of an enterprise approach to continuous quality improvement;
• Encourage group members to attain professional/technical prominence
Extended Leadership team:
• Serve as primary change agent in developing and implementing Open Health Services department plans, strategies, and programs;
• Participate in work shaping for upcoming projects when appropriate;
• Participate in the leadership and management of the department's personnel activities, including: identification, recruitment, development, and retention of personnel required to realize the department's mission, vision, strategy, goals and objectives.
• Back up DHs as required.
• Ensure group members understand the Program and Development mission, strategic direction, priorities, and related plans and activities

As the Group Leader for Health Analytics and Visualization, you will be architecting, implementing, and analyzing health analytics systems with a focus on the major problems facing CMS and HHS in the US health system. This position will require a strong background in healthcare, clinical systems, public health, along with a combination of analytical software development and Health IT systems experience. Ideal candidates will be able to apply modern information systems design and their experience in the Clinical Systems engineering domain to MITRE’s sponsor problems. You will be responsible for helping to lead an effort at creating and rapidly testing impactful and innovative digital health analytics and systems simulation approaches to existing and proposed healthcare system and health system solutions.

MITRE’s Health Analytics and Visualization group brings together skills and expertise in clinical data, health system data, informatics, and health industry operational experience to help our sponsors drive towards improved clinical and health system decision making. You will be working with a team that will be designing and developing open source software tools to aid in this work. You will be responsible for ensuring that new artifacts and isights are based on evidence-based findings, and the process you use will be transparent and well documented so users and sponsors will understand where any additional knowledge or specificity was required to transform practice or system recommendations into actionable policy or proposed system changes.

You must have an excellent knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of the latest software technologies. You need a demonstrated track record of successfully working in teams that have included a blend of clinical staff working collaboratively with software engineers and data scientists. This is an outstanding opportunity to have national impact on some of the most difficult problems facing the US health and healthcare systems.

KEY FUNCTIONS:
• This position will require leadership and management of a team of clinicians and engineers to design, develop, pilot and field, and refine new Health Analytics, Visualization, and Simulation tools and systems
• Evaluation and subject matter expertise in data analytics, Informatics, predictive analytics, and digital health system simulation.
• Existing knowledge of healthcare systems and standards.
• Design of new healthcare systems as well as integration of existing systems.
• Ability to interface with senior leaders of federal healthcare agencies and departments, think creatively, and guide approaches to solutions based on a clinical understanding of the system issues.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Clinical degree (MD, DO, RN, NP, PA, PharmD)
• Should have extensive experience with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, and Knowledge Management systems.
• Experience working with production healthcare systems such as Electronic Health Records, (EHRs), Health Information Exchanges(HIEs), or Interface Engines.
• Familiarity with the healthcare industry, terminology, clinical roles, and national healthcare organizations is required.
• A track record of successfully delivering on deadlines.
• A desire to build services that both clinicians and patients will love and appreciate.
• Solid written and oral communication skills
• Exceptional organizational skills
• Meticulous attention to detail

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Licensed Physician (MD/DO)
• Master’s degree in Administration, Public Health, Public Policy, Nursing, or related field.
• A strong understanding of Healthcare IT standards (HL7 CDA-based standards and the HL7 FHIR)
• Clinical Quality Measures (CQMs) and the associated data standards supporting the interoperability of CQMs in live, operational settings.
• Familiarity and a proven track record leading pilot activities in a live/clinical setting with Electronic Health Record Systems, as well as the associated HIPAA and FISMA privacy and security policies that must be addressed when handling Protected Health Information (PHI), Personally Identifiable Information (PII), and the requirements and processes for working with Institutional Review Boards (IRBs).
