We are seeking a Mission Director for Aviation Safety Innovation who will be accountable for advancing MITRE’s global aviation safety mission through cross-portfolio integration, research needs identification, and stakeholder engagement as MITRE’s “safety expert”.  The individual will engage with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other government and aviation industry leaders to provide thought leadership on the advancement of safety critical issues and MITRE’s role in addressing them. The Mission Director must possess a strong leadership presence, demonstrated thought leadership, and the ability to shape strategic goals into meaningful actions. 

The individual will engage with government and private sector stakeholders to develop and embrace aviation safety, with a focus on application of analytics and research to identify and address safety issues and enable innovative solutions that improve aviation at the global level. 

We are looking for someone who will:
  • Establish relationships and partnerships with industry, higher education, entrepreneurs, aviation industries, aircraft manufacturers, and other key sectors to help drive safety innovation
  • Actively participate in relevant aviation safety forums on the national and international scale to provide thought leadership and shape critical issues
  • Focus on researching, developing, and implementing innovations and technologies that can connect industry, government agencies, academia, and other stakeholders to create a comprehensive, integrated strategic vision and implementation plan for bringing innovative safety approaches into operational reality
  • Lead the formulation of the MITRE aviation safety strategy, including the environmental analysis, customer value analysis, updating these analyses regularly to ensure that they are current and relevant.
  • Lead the development of a multi-tiered sponsor and external engagement strategy in partnership with the appropriate Program Divisions and Technical Centers.
Key Functions:
  • Strategy: Provide leadership to identify major portfolio trends, thrusts, and issues, continually shaping the aviation safety sector accordingly.
  • Sponsor/Stakeholder Engagement: Develop, maintain, and proactively manage sponsor and stakeholder relationships at all levels of the portfolio leadership team.
  • Collaboration: Work across MITRE’s Aviation and Transportation portfolios to ensure alignment of activities, deliverables, and outcomes
  • Communications: Develop and execute an engagement strategy both internally and externally to advance safety innovation and operational implementation

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following disciplines: Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering and 15 years of related experience with proven aviation experience in one or more related domains such at Aviation Safety or Flight Operations.
  • Ability to operate effectively at high levels within sponsors' and potential sponsors' organizations, recognizing and following through on opportunities in new areas and/or with new sponsors.
  • Significant leadership experience at a senior level with a proven track record of increasing value and impact.
  • Proven track record of building and maintaining trusted sponsor relationships
  • Proven track record of building effective internal and external partnerships to increase MITRE’s value and impact.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrate the highest levels of technical, management and business development skills
  • Thoroughly understanding of autonomous technology
  • Relationships with related industries for partnering and information sharing
  • Advanced degree in a related discipline
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following disciplines, Electrical, Computer or Systems Engineering and 15 years of related experience. The candidate will possess Leads definition of work program for major customer base. Recognized and sought out by MITRE, customers, and the profession for expertise.
