MITRE’s Electronic Systems Development and Embedded Security department is seeking to hire engineering students interested in hardware, firmware and embedded systems security to support projects of national significance.  
 
Qualified candidates will join a high-performing team focused on low-level hardware, firmware and software security.  The team performs hands-on research and analysis and develops proof-of-concept prototypes to advance the state-of-the-art. Do you want to perform side-channel analysis? We have a custom-developed testbed and world-class expertise. Are you curious about electromagnetic fault injection? Contribute to our ongoing internal research in this area.  Enjoy CTFs? Join our teams that compete in embedded security competitions, including the MITRE embedded CTF (eCTF).
 
Key Functions:
  • Work on teams performing hands-on security assessments of embedded systems
  • Design and develop prototype embedded hardware/software solutions to real-world problems
 
 
Required Qualifications:
We are interested in highly motivated candidates with a wide variety of skills, insatiable curiosity, enthusiasm, and the ability and interest to dig deep on challenging technical problems. 
  • Enrolled in a BS program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Computer Science
  • Basic understanding of embedded systems and embedded software
  • Basic understanding of embedded systems and embedded software, digital hardware systems, or signal processing concepts
  • Basic understanding of and/or interest in topics relating to embedded systems security
Preferred Qualifications:
Highly-qualified candidates will have classroom and/or project experience with one or more of the following topics.  We do not, however, expect undergraduate student candidates to have experience with all of these topics.
  • Computer architecture
  • Operating systems & kernel internals
  • Signal processing and machine learning techniques
  • Scientific/numeric computing with Python
  • Compiler internals, debuggers, disassemblers, and other low level development tools
  • Common cryptographic algorithms (e.g. AES, 3DES, RSA, ECC, etc.) and protocols (e.g. TLS, Diffie-Hellman key exchange, etc.) 
  • Software reverse engineering
  • Hardware attacks and defense (e.g. side-channel analysis, fault injection, trojans, etc.)
  • Hands-on reverse engineering techniques (JTAG/UART probing, PCB mods and RE, etc.)

 

* Students need to be currently enrolled and will be enrolled the following semester in a full-time in an accredited degree-seeking university program.*
 
**70% of MITRE’s full-time jobs require US government security clearances, therefore many internships require that the candidates be clearable.**
