The Chief Architect for Network Automation and Intelligent Control has the unique opportunity to significantly impact the nation’s most important missions and critical infrastructure.  MITRE’s Infrastructure and Networking Technical Center is looking for a senior technical leader with extensive knowledge of communications networks and experience with network automation and intelligent control.  If you are looking for a chance to make a difference by improving the resilience and operational effectiveness of our country’s most important networks, then this position may be for you. In this role, you will be working with enterprise networks supporting our national defense and other government agencies, as well as wireless and tactical networks, satellite communications and operational technology infrastructure, all supporting critical missions.  The Chief Architect for Network Automation and Intelligent Control must have an entrepreneurial spirit and be a recognized thought leader in networking technologies and network operations. Key Functions:

  • Provide technical direction for network automation initiatives and projects across multiple government agencies and sponsors
  • Create prototypes and deploy pilot capabilities to improve network and mission resilience
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor to government sponsors
  • Offer technical leadership in helping to shape the division strategy and work portfolio
  • Drive innovation and internal R&D efforts
  • Engage as a key advisor in technical recruiting and staff development
  • Drive development of new technical capabilities for the technical center

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of related experience including 2 years of leadership experience
Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances.


Required Qualifications:

  • Deep understanding of traditional IP networking (including architecture, protocol design and analysis) and familiarity with emerging non-IP based paradigms such as Named Data Networking (NDN)
  • Proven track record of developing and deploying network automation solutions
  • Experience with prototyping and building resiliency-aware, autonomous and adaptive networks. Proclivity for hands-on work is desired
  • Understanding of programmable control plane (e.g., SDN) and data plane technologies (e.g., P4)
  • Working knowledge of various machine learning paradigms (deep learning, re-enforcement learning, transfer learning, neuromorphic learning etc.) with an understanding of mathematical underpinnings of various models. 
  • Understanding of the applicability of machine learning models to network and distributed systems is desired
  • Ability to perform analyses suited to the need, from quick, “back-of-the-envelope” calculations to understand performance aspects to more sophisticated techniques including stochastic modeling, control theory, optimization, and network science.
  • Demonstrated ability to take risk and achieve significant work program or organizational outcomes
  • Obtain and maintain a TS/SCI level security clearance
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven track record of proposing and leading R&D initiatives and successfully transitioning to operational environment
  • Active involvement with academic and commercial research, with a track record of publishing at conferences and peer-reviewed journals
  • Successfully deployed SDN, or other automated controls, in an operational network
  • Proficient in network theoretic approaches and applying them to practical network environments
  • Hands-on experience deploying military radio networks, SATCOM and/or other wireless network technologies
  • Understanding of and exposure to operational technology (OT) infrastructure and industrial control systems (ICS) supporting critical infrastructure
  • Desire to engage with and mentor early career team members
